Origin Notes

Staven Almanac is an independent editorial publication. It documents the factors that influence metabolic rate, energy expenditure, and the longer rhythms of metabolic balance — without institutional affiliation or commercial agenda.

01 — Statement of Purpose

Why this record exists

The study of metabolic rate is a field where language matters considerably. Terms such as basal metabolic rate, adaptive thermogenesis, and metabolic flexibility carry precise meanings in published research, yet they circulate in popular contexts in forms that have drifted significantly from those meanings. This publication exists to maintain a more accurate record.

Each entry is written against the background of peer-reviewed literature. The editorial approach is observational: the aim is to document what is known, what is contested, and what remains incompletely understood, rather than to advocate for any particular dietary or behavioural protocol.

Staven Almanac is an independent editorial publication focused on everyday wellness practices. The publication is not affiliated with any commercial, governmental, or institutional body.

Primary Editor

Eleanor Whitfield

Eleanor Whitfield has spent the past decade writing about nutritional science and metabolic research for independent publications. Her work focuses on the intersection of published research and everyday practice — specifically how findings on basal metabolic rate, energy expenditure, and adaptive thermogenesis translate (and sometimes fail to translate) into accessible, accurate editorial content.

Contributing Editor

Tobias Marsden

Tobias Marsden contributes research-led articles with a focus on macronutrient composition, the thermic effect of food, and the role of consistent eating rhythm in supporting long-term metabolic balance. His editorial approach draws on published literature in nutritional science and avoids extrapolation beyond what the evidence supports.

Guest Contributor

Harriet Ashcroft

Harriet Ashcroft is a London-based writer with a background in wellness science communication. She contributes occasional long-form entries on movement, metabolic flexibility, and the environmental variables that modulate daily energy expenditure. Her work appears here and in several UK-based independent publications.

03 — What We Cover

The subjects under examination

01
Basal Metabolic Rate
The resting energy requirement — what it comprises, how it is estimated, and what variables shape it across the lifespan.
02
Adaptive Thermogenesis
The body's capacity to adjust energy expenditure in response to dietary intake, temperature, and other environmental signals.
03
Nutrient Partitioning and the Thermic Effect of Food
How macronutrient composition influences post-ingestive energy cost and the distribution of nutrients across body compartments.
04
Metabolic Flexibility and Long-term Metabolic Health
The capacity to shift between fuel sources and its relationship to consistent daily activity, whole food intake, and metabolic balance over time.
04 — Editorial Principles

How we work

Staven Almanac operates under the following editorial principles: articles are reviewed by at least one second editor before publication, sources are cited where appropriate, corrections are noted publicly, and writers disclose any commercial relationships that could influence their selection of subject matter.

Articles published on Staven Almanac are editorial in nature and reflect the writers' observations on everyday wellness practices. The content is not intended as professional advice, nor as guidance for the management of any specific condition. Readers with specific concerns about their daily routines are encouraged to speak with a qualified wellness professional.

We recommend speaking with a qualified wellness or nutrition professional before introducing any new habit or routine to your daily life, particularly if you have specific dietary requirements.
